James,

Wonderful news that you have taken up Fly Fishing. No shortage of places to fish in California. Some great fishing clubs to join as well. Ticks are a problem in your area as you are aware. I wear light clothing and keep covered. I spray DEET on my hat and shoes/boots. I buy outdoor wear with a plant based repellent that is built into the garment and washable rather than spraying myself with a toxic chemical that I may inhale in the process. I shower as soon as I get back home and I throw the garments I wore into the dryer.

Insist on getting a script for antibiotics if you do get bitten.

I hope you catch the fish of your dreams in the New Year.

Best

Michelle,

I met Diana Rudolph this year at the American Museum of Fly Fishing where we were honored for our contribution to the sport. I didn't have the opportunity to talk with her about the TV side of the industry. My guess is that we walked a similar road.

It's comforting to know we have someone like you pushing to keep
professional anglers on the air.

I'm encouraged by the supportive blog posts on this subject by the guys as well.

Best

I couldn't agree with you more! I'm from a cold area so I don't see too many woman fishing in bikinis, but when I see them do it on TV or see pictures in magazines I always wonder what they are thinking. Beyond the objectification aspect, how can that be a comfortable way to fish? From sitting on a hot boat seat to bending over to grab a fish, proper attire is a must. I've had hooks in my clothes too many times to want to bare so much skin!

Any man living with women has the added social disability of a brain wired for "other" tasks related to females. Advertisers have long taken advantage of this visual pertinacity because they know sex sells by association. The older I get the less it matters but I'm still just a man creature and heeding the call of nature is engrained behavior.

There is an awful lot of stuff associated with fly fishing that has absolutely nothing to do with fly fishing and I am glad I read this post. I hope others read it, too, and I hope at least a couple of other men feel at least a little uncomfortable as they do so.

I have become familiar with you and your work through the exhibit "A Graceful Rise" at the AMFF in Manchester, VT and I look forward to learning more. Thanks for all you do.

(According to another famous Canadian outdoorsman, Red Green, "I'm a man but I can change. If I have to, I guess." Let's hope it doesn't come down to that.)

Hello - I found your post on Outdoor Blogger Network and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a show on the network (Sportsman Channel) called "Breaking the Surface" with Kim Bain-Moore and Diana Rudolph. Two female anglers with loads of awards, world-records and accolades under their belt.
But the show only lasted two seasons. We couldn't sell it.
How awful is that?
They were outstanding anglers- no one could deny that. But they weren't in bikinis and they weren't men. Two ingredients, it seems, to make a selling fishing show.
I wish I had the answer - as a female in this industry - but I did my part to push those women into the media as much as I could. I think we'll see them again...perhaps they were just ahead of their time as well.
Keep up the great work.

Although I am periodically guilty of flashing a lady in a skimpy swimsuit (my bad) I don't go for the crude laugh or punchline. My wife is a fly fisherman I have to make sure it doesn't offend her or she'll kick my ***. I like your style!
